voiceover keeps malfunctioning and/or crashing randomly

Hi all,

I've had my iPhone four for quite some time and had few problems with it. Since the most recent update of Ios six though, voiceover as been doing something very very strange. It will occasionally, and with no particular provocation, stop speaking entirely. Voiceover is usually still active when this happens; I can toggle the screen curtain on and off and use voiceover gestures, but there is no speech, even if I try to toggle the speech. The only ways I have found to fix this problem (even a reset didn't help!) were to either hook up the phone to iTunes and activate voiceover that way which brings back the speech, or call my phone. The phone call seems to wake up the speech functionality for some reason. I have also noticed that, while using the zone on my phone last night, voiceover crashed every time I tried to refresh the page. I'd have to lock the screen and wait a few minutes, then turn voiceover off and back on again for it to work. In these particular crashes, voiceover would sometimes not only stop working, but turn off completely.

I'm scared. Please help.

Try doing a VO reset, from the lock screen, press the power button 6 times rapidly this will usually reset VO, and you should hear voice over is running. see if this doesn't make it work better. Also, how much free space is left on your phone. I've seen things like this happening before, but it's usually due to someone not having enough memory on there phone>

for the zone problem, turn off the zone sounds when you use the zone with your iPhone.

I think it's /SOUND to turn it off.

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for all of your responses. I appreciate them very much. Turning off the sounds for the zone did indeed clear up the crashing issue, so thank you.
As for triple click home, I've already got that enabled, and I've tried resetting voiceover numerous times to no avail. However, as soon as I can I will restore the phone and hope that that will help. As for memory, I still have about five gigs free, hopefully that's not the problem.

I was having that problem too! So I got a new phone. Lol I am so impatient with technology, plus I have this best buy deal where, as long as I'm able to provide them with all pieces of my broken phone, they give me a new one for free. The only downside is waiting for the new one to come in, but it only takes a couple days. It's a really sweet service.

Anyway, best of luck. I hope you're able to figure it out. How long have you had it? As much as I like the iPhone, like every phone, they have their breaking point.

Not sure if this sent but did getting the new phone help? Thanks.

I've had my phone for about a year and a half; my contract is up in September, I may get another phone then. It's a shame though as I really like it other than the voiceover issue. It's functional enough that it's not a huge deal, but I will restore it as soon as I get my laptop fixed, see if it's a firmware bug, because the problems only began happening after the most recent update.

Thanks so much all of you for your feedback.

I would do a backup and restore. I did this for a focus issue I was having when trying to type on the web and that seems to be resolved. Be sure to backup your phone in iTunes by highlighting the phone in the devices table, pressing the applications key in windows or Voiceover-shift-M on the mac, down arrowing to backup and pressing enter. I did this because I have things organized in folders and the iCloud backup doesn't preserve them.

I hadn't really used my iPhone to access the Zone until a few days ago, and when I did, I experienced the same issue mentioned in this thread. VoiceOver crashed everytime I tried to move around the site. It doesn't happen on other sites, it seems to be limited to the Zone. I tried Safari, and then, out of curiosity, I tried another browser called Atomic Web; same results with both browsers. The only difference was that, for me, when VoiceOver was crashed, I couldn't perform any VoiceOver gestures. I had to lock the phone, unlock it, and then wait it out. Eventually, it would come back, but the browser would be closed.

Did you try turning off your zone sounds? Worked for me and was suggested by someone in this thread.

Oops, no, I didn't. Guess I should have read all the replies before I posted!

I thought about this, but it looks like you've gotten good advice.
You can reset the phone without a computer, but you should get sighted help to do it. You'll find when you upgrade things will be different though.
Also, when people are having issues with these phones, I always wonder how many times they've dropped them.
These are so technical, you don't want to drop it ever, if you can help it.

Meglet's advice worked! :)

I always wonder about people dropping their phones too. I'm obsessively careful with mine and haven't dropped it in the 4 months I've owned it. But I was at a family get-together this weekend and know of at least 2 people who dropped their expensive phones onto the pavement. I can't understand spending money on a device and then being careless with it. Their fallback was, "It's got a case." Lol that only protects them to a certain point.

I have to give credit where credit is due: the suggestion concerning turning off zone sounds was not my idea. I'm glad it's worked for you too.

I've owned my phone since October and have yet to drop it...truly, I mean. It's fallen from about knee height on a shelf to a carpeted floor, and it's tumbled out of a backpack when the pack is on the floor on its side, then sort of skittered a ways on tile, while in its case. I've also rolled on it a time or two in bed because I left it on the bed and forgot about it. But as of yet, never dropped it. Completely agree that if you're going to get such an expensive device, you do your damnedest to keep it safe and don't be a klutz with it. Heh. Accidents happen, of course, but still.

I've drop my iphone 4 countless time, it works fine. The adviceis get one of those protective case then, the impact will be minimum. of course, you are notstupid enough to purposely drop it or kicked on it or step on it are you.
You no need to have a sighted person to do a restore without the computer. I've done it twice before, and it works fine. Voiceover will speak when the phone is back on, it will ask you if you want to use VO double tap orsomething like that. Both times i do it without any sighted help. In fact, i don't think i ever reset/restore the phone with sighted help or with the computer at all. That is what, ICloud for.

Post 21 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 14-Jul-2013 11:04:50

Yes, I like to use the computer when resetting them or something.
I don't know about these protective cases, the shock has to do something, even if it doesn't get broken.
I've got mine in a really thick leather padded wallet. I've only dropped it once, and that was a short fall, because I was sitting down and it was at leg height.

Once it slide down my body, because I was trying to pay the pizza lady and she was trying to give me the stuff. Lol.
I don't know.
I'd say if you are a person that drops stuff, these protective cases are well worth the money.

figured this was a voice over and Iphone board so here is something I have found with the VZ Iphone5. In the dialer under the phone app save contact and delete "gackspace" is unlabled. Hmm.. no big deal if your a lont time user of IOS but its a small anoying issues when your teaching the Iphone and you tell someone all Iphone phone dialers look the same.

Post 23 by starfly (99956) on Monday, 29-Jul-2013 14:56:10

I am seeing voiceover crash if the iphone receives multiple sounds at once, this is wit the Iphone5 from t-mobile.

Yep, I've noticed that too.

ok. its deffinitly a voice over issue cause I've never dropped mine and i've had it for less than a year and this is the second time it froze on me. however before i just pressed home 3 times and it started working now i did that plus turned the phone off and on and still the same lets see if restoring it works.

yipi! my wife went in to general, and accessibility and turned voice over on and off threw there and then it started working. I guess you just got to play with it until something works.
